(UPDATE) THE House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill 11199 that would convert the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) into the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DepDev).

During plenary session on Tuesday, 178 lawmakers voted for the measure. There were no opposing votes and none abstained.

Under the bill, the DepDev shall be the primary policy, planning, coordinating, and monitoring arm of the executive branch of government on the national economy.

It would have a secretary, at least five undersecretaries and at least five assistant secretaries.

DepDev shall be composed of technical and sectoral staff, operations support staff, and regional offices.

The DepDev secretary, appointed by the president, shall serve as the country’s chief economist.

Under the bill, agencies attached to the NEDA shall continue to be attached to the DepDev.

These include the Private Partnership Center of the Philippines, Philippine Institute for Development Studies, Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency, Tariff Commission, Philippine Statistics Authority, Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute, Commission on Population and Development, and Development Academy of the Philippines.
