The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be prudent in spending the agency’s P279 billion budget for 2025, Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla said on Wednesday.
The DILG has the fourth-highest budget allocation under the P6.326 trillion national budget for 2025.
“We extend our gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. for his support of our mandate to foster excellence in local governance, promote peace and order, and enhance public safety for the development of resilient and inclusive communities,” Remulla said.
“We assure the President, Congress, and the public of our commitment to utilize our budget responsibly, judiciously, and prudently in support of the administration’s agenda for prosperity by fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the Filipino people,” he added.
Aside from the DILG proper, there are nine attached agencies under the DILG. They are the following.
- Bureau of Fire Protection
- Bureau of Jail Management and Penology
- Local Government Academy
- National Commission on Muslim Filipinos
- National Police Commission
- National Youth Commission
- Philippine Commission on Women
- Philippine National Police
- Philippine Public Safety College
The DILG’s proposed budget for 2025 is P279.4 billion, meaning its final 2025 allocation was slightly reduced to P279.1 billion.
Remulla was named secretary of the interior in October 2024.
He replaced then-DILG chief Benhur Abalos, Jr., who resigned from his post after filing his certificate of candidacy for Senator in the May 2025 election.
When he assumed office, Remulla pitched for a drastic reduction of PNP generals from 130 to 25, saying that the current set-up is top-heavy.
”There are a lot of generals without commands. Mayroon tayong APC, area police commands, na wala naman tao sa ilalim nila. So marami tayong lugar na redundancies na kailangan i-trim down. It’s a 32-year-old law na kailangan bisitahin ulit,” Remulla said. —NB, GMA Integrated News
