The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has requested the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to allow expenditures for job fairs amid a looming spending ban as the election period.

DMW-Taipei Migrant Workers Office (MWO) Director of Migrant Workers Services and Labor Attaché Cesar Chavez Jr. made the plea to the poll body in order to expedite the hiring of thousands of job vacancies in Taiwan.

Chavez Jr. said that of the 5,000 job orders from Taiwan and there are about “3,000 pending job orders to be filled up.”

“Kung mabigyan tayo ng Comelec exemption, actually DMW is working on that direction also, kasi marami rin made-deprive kung ititigil itong mga job fairs local and overseas,” Chavez said at the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the DMW, in coordination with local officials and stakeholders, have conducted three job fairs in Quezon City, Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija, and San Jose del Monte City in Bulacan to fulfill Taiwan’s job orders.

Chavez said that about 2,000 were “almost hired” during the three job fairs and are undergoing further evaluations, interviews, and compliance with other credentials and documentary requirements.

“So, in other words, meron pa tayong 3,000 na ineexpedite natin mafill up,” he said.

Section 261 (v) of the Omnibus Election Code (OEC) calls for the “prohibition against release, disbursement or expenditure of public funds” during the election period.

The election period for the midterm polls begins on Sunday, January 12, 2025.

Nonetheless, the Taipei labor attaché said that seekers of job opportunities in Taiwan can directly apply to accredited recruitment agencies which can be found on the DMW’s website.
