At least seven people died in 606 road traffic incidents recorded during the holiday season from December 22, 2024 to 6:00am of January 3, 2025, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday.
The DOH, in a statement, said the 606 incidents recorded from eight pilot sites is 31% higher compared to the same period last year.
Of the traffic incidents, 29 were recorded on January 3.
The incidents include:
- 115 due to drunk driving,
- 527 due to failure to use safety accessories, and
- 433 involving motorcycles.
Given the increase in figures, the Health Department called on the public to drive safely and follow traffic rules.
“We expect that the traffic situation will go back to non-holiday season level so let us stay disciplined and practice road safety,” the DOH said.
Likewise, the DOH reminded motorists of the following:
- wear safety gears such as helmet and seatbelt
- avoid overspeeding
- follow traffic signs
- don’t drive when tired
- don’t drink and drive
“Lives, unlike vehicles, do not have spare tires. Drive safely,” it said.—Llanesca Panti/AOL, GMA Integrated News
