COMPANIES engaged in information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) in the country declined by 7.3 percent, while employment in the sector gained 0.7-percent, according to a 2022 study released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Conducted in April 2023, the 2022 Annual Survey of Philippine Business and Industry (ASPBI) showed the number of IT-BPM businesses dropped to 2,045 that year from 2,205 in 2021.

However, the same period had more workers at 854,601 from the previous 849,058.

The survey also revealed that 21 percent of the sector offered computer programming services in 430 firms, 20 percent were in customer relationship management (408); and 13.8 percent focused on sales and marketing (283).

Customer relationship management accounted for 52.5 percent of IT-BPM employment with 448,882 workers. Sales and marketing (including telemarketing) followed with 159,434 workers (18.7 percent), other call center activities (voice), not elsewhere classified, with 58,674 workers (6.9 percent).

The IT-BPM industry posted revenues of P846.74 billion in 2022, 0.2 percent lower than the P848.45 billion in 2021.

Total expenses added up to P735.41 billion, or 1.2 percent higher than the P726.66 billion in 2021.

Among transactions outside the country, the United States contributed P193.25 billion or 59 percent of revenues.

The IT-BPM sector itself earned P327.63 billion from transactions outside the country, or 38.7 percent of total revenues in 2022 — an increase of 4.2 percent from the P314.28 billion in 2021.
