MANILA, Philippines — The man involved in the dragging of a cat whose video went viral on social media admitted that he aimed to throw away the animal.

The incident got the condemnation of the public and animal welfare groups.

A video on social media showed the cat tied to the tricycle that was speeding. The cat was running to match the speed of the motorcycle so as not to be dragged. The incident happened in Malasiqui, Pangasinan.

According to the uploader, identified only as “Ken,” he shouted at the driver of the tricycle when he saw the poor animal being dragged.

He said that the incident occurred on Saturday. The tricycle driver admitted that he was throwing away the cat.

Meanwhile, Gomez Village Officer Brian Dave Austria said they were able to trace the 71-year-old tricycle driver and rescue the cat which sustained injuries. He said the cat was given medical treatment.

The 71-year-old tricycle driver on the other hand said it was not his intention to drag the cat, claiming he had very poor hearing.

He said the cat came from their place and he was unsure how it got there.

They decided to throw the cat after it hurt somebody.

The animal groups condemned the incident.

Heidi Caguioa, project director of the Animal Kingdom Foundation, called the act “cruel.”

“Apparently, it was very clear that the cat was being tortured so it’s really super unacceptable. Napakasakit sa puso panoorin (Watching the video is so painful),” Caguioa said in a television interview.

Anna Cabrera, executive director of PAWS, asked the public to report incidents of animal cruelty to the authorities instead of posting on social media.
