MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos yesterday expressed his deepest sympathies to those who have been affected by the raging wildfires in Southern California that have killed at least 16 people.

“On behalf of the Filipino people, I extend my deepest sympathies to all who have been affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California, USA – a place that many of our kababayans call home,” Marcos said in a statement.

Marcos issued the statement on the eve of his trilateral phone call with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

“May the community’s road to recovery begin with strength, compassion and solidarity. Please stay safe and vigilant,” Marcos said.

The US government requested to reschedule the trilateral phone call between the three leaders today (Monday) “due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles,” Presidential Communications Office Secretary Cesar Chavez told reporters.

The virtual meeting was initially scheduled yesterday.

The Associated Press reported that the death toll from the wildfires ravaging California has risen to 16, quoting the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office.

The fires that began Tuesday have burned more than 12,000 structures, including homes, apartment buildings and businesses.
