(UPDATE) PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will have a virtual meeting with United States President Joe Biden and Japan Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru this weekend, Malacañang confirmed on Thursday.
“We can confirm that this is in the calendar of PBBM on January 12, Sunday,” acting Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Cesar Chavez said in a text message to reporters. “They call it a Trilateral Phone Call.”
The palace official, however, did not disclose the exact time the meeting will take place or what matters will be discussed by the three leaders.
A high-level US-Philippines-Japan meeting was held in Washington, D.C., in April last year, where Biden, Marcos, and then Japanese PM Fumio Kishida discussed several issues, including enhancing extensive coordination to promote maritime domain awareness and deepen cooperation on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Also announced during that summit was the establishment of a trilateral maritime dialogue to enhance coordination and collective responses to promote maritime cooperation to address illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
The US and Japan likewise expressed their strong commitment of support for the economic prosperity of the Philippines, where they vowed to ensure “facilitating the steady implementation of ongoing and future economic cooperation projects toward the Philippines’ attainment of upper middle-income country status and beyond.”
