A DAY after the New Year’s Day, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. buckled down to work, finalizing plans and priorities to be discussed during a full Cabinet meeting on Jan. 7.

In a text message, Presidential Communications Secretary Cesar Chavez said the president and Executive Secretary Lucas Bersmin were “comparing notes” regarding the Cabinet meeting scheduled.

Chavez did not provide details on the meeting’s agenda.

In July 2022, Marcos expressed his intention to conduct two Cabinet meetings weekly.

The Jan. 7 meeting comes on the heels of the president’s enactment of Republic Act 12116 or the 2025 General Appropriations Act, which included a veto of P194.3 billion in line items in the Department of Public Works and Highways’ budget and unprogrammed appropriations.

“We will ensure that social services, including education and health, would remain our priority in accordance with our mandate under the 1987 Constitution,” Marcos said during the budget signing.

He said the government must exercise maximum prudence, otherwise “we run the risk of increasing our deficit and debt and derailing our development agenda for our country.”
