THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) disclosed on Friday that over 639,000 motorists were apprehended for several road violations in 2024.
In a statement, the LTO said it was a 20.75 percent increase, in contrast to the 12-month period in 2023, when 529,439 motorists were apprehended.
Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza, the agency’s chief, said the increase in the motorists getting caught was attributed to the implementation of “new strategies for the strict enforcement of road safety rules and regulations,” which was part of a road safety advocacy of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.
“I commend our enforcers for going the extra mile in enforcing traffic rules and regulations. Most of them even went on duty at night and even in the wee hours in the morning just to enforce the law,” Mendoza said.
The LTO also cited an anti-colorum drive and operations against trucks violating road safety regulations that included overloading and using worn-out tires, citing a delivery truck apprehended on Friday for using worn-out tires.
Meanwhile, Mendoza also said a total of 29,709 vehicles were impounded in 2024, a 21.93 percent increase from 24,366 in 2023.
He also vowed to sustain the “aggressive operations” as part of government efforts in ensuring road safety.
“Let these results of our operations serve as a reminder to motorists that we will further strengthen our operation to ensure that all motorists follow traffic laws,” Mendoza said.
