MANILA, Philippines — State volcanologists recorded 27 volcanic earthquakes around Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island in the past 24 hours.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Kanlaon spewed 5,840 tons of sulfur dioxide on Friday, which produced plumes that rose 750 meters above the summit.

Phivolcs said the volcano’s edifice remained inflated, indicating a potential magma intrusion is ongoing beneath the surface.

State volcanologists also recorded five ash emissions that lasted from five minutes to 1.9 hours.

Entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone remains prohibited as sudden eruptions, lava and lahar flows, and ash and rockfalls may occur anytime.

Pilots have been advised to avoid flying near the volcano as plumes can be dangerous to aircraft.
