A fire broke out in a residential area in Barangay 458, Sampaloc, Manila early Thursday morning, which affected around 500 families and left one person injured.
According to a report of EJ Gomez on Unang Balita, a resident jumped from the third floor to escape the blaze, causing a minor injury.
The fire started at 5:05 a.m. and reached the fourth alarm at 5:30 a.m., based on the update of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
With the help of 18 fire trucks, the BFP declared a “fire out” at 8:08 a.m.
However, the basketball court, which is supposed to be the evacuation area for the affected residents, was also hit by the fire.
The local government has yet to finalize the evacuation site.
Some of the affected residents are appealing for help as they were not able to save anything from the fire.
“Sa likod po ng bahay, pagising na po kami noon dahil papasok na, pagsilip po namin sa bintana nasa likod na po ng bahay namin mismo,” affected resident Rosalinda Burlungan said.
(As we woke and were about to prepare for school and work, we saw through our window that the fire was already behind our house.)
“Kaya wala na po kaming talagang naisalba lahat. Kaya pinababa ko na po yung mga anak ko. Yung mga gamit na naipon ko, kasi single mother po ako, wala po talaga,” she added.
(That’s why we were not able to save anything. I immediately evacuated my kids. All the things I have earned as a single mother are all gone.)
While the BFP is still investigating the cause of the fire, Barangay 458 kagawad Gabriel de Guzman said the blaze allegedly started from a candle.
“Nagstart po yung apoy sa kandila. Meron pong bata na lumabas at meron ding nakita sa kaniya na nasusunog na yung bahay nila, hindi pa siya nagsasalita,” he said.
(The fire started from a candle. There was a kid who went outside, and someone saw that the kid’s house was already on fire, but the kid did not speak up.)
“Siyempre, pagtingin namin sa mga bintana namin ay wala na talaga. Malaki na yung apoy, so wala po kaming na-survive,” he added.
(We looked out our windows and the fire was already huge so none of us was able to save any belongings.)
