FORMER Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson, who has announced his withdrawal from the senatorial race in the May elections, will still be listed as a candidate, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

That’s because his name has already been included in the ballots that have been printed, Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia explained on Monday.

Singson told his followers Sunday he is dropping out following a bout with pneumonia.

Garcia said Singson should personally file his withdrawal at the Comelec office in Intramuros, Manila.

He said the votes cast for the former governor would be declared as stray.

The Comelec started printing last week the 73 million ballots for the May 12 elections for the midterm elections and the first parliamentary polls in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The printing should be completed by April 14, Garcia said.

Singson is among the 66 out of 183 senatorial aspirants who were declared by the Comelec as legitimate candidates.

The 83-year-old filed his certificate of candidacy for senator as an independent on Oct. 7, 2024, after a two-year hiatus from politics.

He last served as mayor of Narvacan town from 2019 to 2022.

Singson was Ilocos Sur’s governor from 1972 to 1986, 1992 to 2001, 2004 to 2007 and 2010 to 2013.
