The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) reported a “safer” and “more secured” Christmas and New Year celebrations as stray bullet incidents dropped by 50% in Metro Manila compared to the previous year.

In a statement on Thursday, the NCRPO also said that firecracker-related injuries dropped by 28% while confiscated illegal firecrackers increased by 1,386%.

“Our security preparations in coordination with the LGUs, other stakeholders and the community paved the way to lesser number of accidents this year,” NCRPO chief Police Brigadier General Anthony Aberin said.

“We will further study and analyze the situation in order to come up with more effective measures next year. Let us not rest on this achievement and let us continue to improve the delivery of security services in Metro Manila,” he added.

As of 6 a.m. on Thursday, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said eight people were reported injured in 14 stray bullet incidents across the country.

Most of these incidents were reported in Metro Manila with six cases, followed by Zamboanga Peninsula with three cases, and Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Cordillera Administrative Region with one each.

A total of 24 individuals have been arrested in connection with 30 reported incidents of indiscriminate discharge of firearms, according to the PNP.

Among the arrested persons due to indiscriminate firing of guns were two PNP personnel, a member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and a Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) personnel.

A total of 822 persons were reported injured due to firecrackers, according to the PNP.

The PNP also arrested 83 individuals and confiscated 600,130 illegal firecrackers worth around P4,046,356.

Last Wednesday, the PNP reported 27 cases of indiscriminate discharge of firearms nationwide amid celebrations for New Year 2025. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
