UAP-CLASS continues legacy of leadership

IN embracing the arrival of the upcoming fiscal year, the United Architects of the Philippines Committee on Liturgical Architecture and Sacred Spaces (UAP-CLASS) held the induction of its officers and new members on Oct. 16, 2024, in Davao City.

Over 80 guests graced the ceremony, including representatives from the UAP Executive Committee and National Board of Directors and the Langkob 4th Liturgical Architecture Conference Organizing Committee, with the Davao team headed by Ar. Gilbert Fortich and the Guild of Liturgical Designers (GOLD).

The UAP Area D District director, several chapter presidents, as well as industry partners, sponsors, and parish priests also attended. Their presence was a testimony of their conviction to recognize these architects and the advocacy that the UAP-CLASS upholds.

The UAP-CLASS, a special committee under the UAP national president, aims to unify sacred space designers by aligning their work with liturgical architecture standards. Its focus is to embody the liturgy in architecture and culture through physical spaces, address concerns and advocate for common causes.

The event set the tone for a year of growth, collaboration and meaningful contributions to the profession, the community, and the church the UAP-CLASS serves.

During my welcome remarks, I, Ar. Marie Stephanie Gilles, the UAP-CLASS’ founding chairperson, emphasized the ultimate goal of liturgical design: to create sacred spaces that foster a deeper connection between those who enter them and God the Creator, leading toward greater piety and devotion.

A video summarizing the journey and notable projects of UAP-CLASS and GOLD over the years showcased their achievements and steadfast adherence to their mission and vision.

In his keynote address, Ar. Donato Magcale, the 30th UAP national president, emphasized the unique role of architects as master builders and nation builders, going beyond designing physical structures to influence industry and society positively. He stressed the need for a renewed dedication to leadership, service and holistic contributions.

He commended the group for the success of the recently concluded 4th Liturgical Architecture Conference held in Davao, which was attended by close to 200 delegates and volunteers from all over the Philippines.

He praised the initiative of preparing a book featuring Catholic churches in Davao that will be published in partnership with the Holy Cross of Davao College.

An inspirational message from the Professional Regulatory Board of Architecture (PRBoA) chairperson, Hon. Ar. Robert Sac, shared encouraging news about the potential of Sacred Space Design to be recognized as a specialization within the Professional Regulations Commission.

He urged the formation of a Technical Working Group (TWG) to meet the requirements for this milestone and praised the guild’s vital role in creating ecclesiastical designs and advancing architectural expertise.

Induction

The event culminated in the presentation of the newly inducted officers and members. UAP National Executive Vice President Ar. Annie Pugeda led the charging of officers and Ar. Magcale conducted the oathtaking. The new inductees pledged their commitment to the profession and to further the institution’s goals.

Following the ceremony, UAP-CLASS’ newly appointed Executive Committee was recognized: myself as the chairperson, Ar. Mary Rajelyn Busmente as the vice chairperson, and Ar. Jessica Ersando, my co-writer, as the secretary. The UAP National Board of Directors’ congratulatory remarks created a celebratory atmosphere filled with camaraderie and encouragement.

A cultural dance sponsored by the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and performed by the Madayaw Cultural Ensemble showcased the rich heritage and talent of the Davao region.

To conclude the evening, lucky raffle winners went home with prizes provided by event partner Pacific Paint Boysen Philippines.

This ceremony serves as a beacon of inspiration and a testament to the transformative power of liturgical design. Through such events, the architectural community unites to celebrate excellence, inspiration and commitment, emphasizing sacred space designers’ unique vocation and significant contribution to the church and society.

Ar. Marie Stephanie N. Gilles is the founding chairperson of GOLD and UAP-CLASS. She is the convenor of the Organizing Committee of the 4th Liturgical Architecture Conference 2024. She is the principal architect of SNG Design Enterprise, which specializes in designing liturgical and institutional spaces.

Ar. Jessica P. Ersando is the principal architect of JPE Architects. She is currently the secretary of the UAP-CLASS and GOLD and the director of the Young Architects of UAP Cavite Tierra Alta Chapter.
