Attorney Stephen David has called for the probe on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) to spare his client – suspended Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, given that she has already been charged and cannot freely answer questions without the risk of self-incrimination.

Currently facing legal challenges related to her alleged connections with POGOs, Guo is also distressed about the upcoming Senate hearing scheduled for July 29, her lawyer revealed.

“She is traumatized,” David stated, noting that Guo anticipates the bullying may worsen with the next hearing.

Despite these challenges, Guo’s legal team is preparing to defend her rights vigorously.

Although Guo has expressed willingness to attend court hearings, David added “Of course she can’t be at large. Our defense will go to waste.”

He clarified that her presence would only be necessary during her arraignment or if the prosecutor requires her to take an oath on her affidavit.

During proceedings that only involve discussions between attorneys, Guo can send an authorized representative in her place.

David also confirmed that Guo remains in the Philippines, highlighting her commitment to addressing the legal issues at hand.

Regarding the Senate’s investigation into POGOs, David asserted that Guo has no direct ties to these gambling establishments, stating, “I am here at the Vatican, I’m not lying. She does not have any connection to POGO. She was just a lessor.”

He questioned the purpose of the hearings, suggesting that if national security is the concern, lawmakers should focus on creating relevant legislation rather than targeting Guo.

In light of the ongoing legal proceedings, David mentioned that Guo is unlikely to attend the July 29 hearing, preferring to defend herself in a more suitable forum.

He acknowledged the Office of the Solicitor General’s right to file a quo warranto petition against Guo but indicated that their legal team would contest it.

“We will just file a motion to dismiss being premature,” David stated, challenging the basis for the quo warranto action.
