State of calamity declared in several areas in Mindanao

Several areas in Mindanao have declared a state of calamity because of floods caused by recent weather systems, particularly from July 10 to 12, 2024.

Among those that declared a state of calamity are the towns of Kabacan and Pikit in Cotabato and Barangays Nuing, Balangunan, Quiapo, Butuan, Molmol, and San Isidro in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental due to the bad weather conditions.

Up to 50 houses were damaged while 202 households were affected by the flooding and landslide.

“Majority of the damage po is on the agricultural areas. Bale po, that comprises mga 80 to 90% of the affected households. As of now, we have 202 households that were affected po due to the landslide and flood,” Ariel Acosta, chief of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), said.

Some flights to and from Mindanao were cancelled due to the southwest monsoon intensified by Typhoon Carina.

In Zamboanga City, several passengers were stranded at the Zamboanga International Airport on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

“Pag ganito, in-a-assess naman natin sila dito sa airport tapos the airline concerned, binibigyan naman sila ng accommodation. Yung ibang mga pasahero, binibigyan naman nila ng free meals, yung iba, pinapasok nila ngayon dito sa amin for the rebooking of tickets,” CAAP Zamboanga City OIC Manager, Engr. Roderick Tugade, said.

Some flights in Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Zamboanga, General Santos, Davao, Dipolog, and Pagadian to and from Manila were also cancelled, according to the Manila International Airport Authority. —GMA Regional TV
