SIARGAO topped the list of the seven best places to visit in Southeast Asia, according to an article in Lonely Planet’s July issue.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco on Monday thanked Lonely Planet for the recognition, as well as all visitors and locals who contributed to Siargao’s status as an exceptional destination.

“This recognition reflects the indisputable beauty of Siargao, from its famous surfing spots to its pristine beaches and lively local culture,” Frasco said.

Siargao, in Surigao del Norte, is famous for its top-notch surfing, including the Cloud 9 break, which is recognized as one of the greatest waves in the world.

It was also chosen as the best island in Asia in the annual Condé Nast Traveler readers’ choice awards for the top islands to visit.

The island displayed resilience when Typhoon “Odette” (International name: Rai) ravaged it in December 2021, but with the support of organizations and nature’s healing process, it began to recover.

“This achievement motivates us to continue our efforts in promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the natural wonders of our beautiful archipelago,” Frasco said.

“Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or planning your next great escape, we invite you to Siargao — an island where every wave, every sunset, and every smile leaves an indelible mark on your heart,” she added.

Also on the Lonely Planet’s list are Amed, Bali; Cao Bang, Vietnam; Khao Sok National Park, Thailand; Luang Prabang, Laos; Penang, Malaysia; and Gili Air, Indonesia.
