A ten-year-old boy died after being trapped inside their burning house in Paco, Manila on Wednesday morning.
According to Jonathan Andal’s report on Saksi, the fire broke out in a house along Merced Street and lasted for more than an hour. It reached the second alarm before it was put out by firefighters.
The victim’s aunt and the housekeeper said the boy was trapped in one of the bedrooms on the second floor.
“Sabi ng amo ko kunin yung bata. Sabi ko hindi ko na makuha kuya kasi may apoy na. Hindi ko siya makuha. Sabi ng daddy niya, lumabas na kami dito sa labas, takbo na kami dito, hindi na siya nakuha,” said Flora Ranuco, a household helper.
(My employer told me to get the child. I said I can’t get him because of the fire. So I can’t get him. His daddy said, we’ve already gone outside, we ran here, we weren’t able to save him.)
Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly and also reached the ceiling and walls of two neighboring houses.
“Wala na kaming magawa lahat, ayun kasi yung usok lumalabas na dito,” said Naty Carillo, the victim’s aunt.
(All of us could not do anything, the smoke coming outside was too thick.)
“Sa isang iglap nawala siya, wala kahit anong gawin nilang ligtas wala talaga, kasi hindi mo makayanan ang usok,” she added.
(In an instant he was gone, there was nothing they could do to save him because the smoke was too thick.)
It was before 1 p.m. when the child’s remains were removed from the house and taken to a funeral home.
His parents were taken to a hospital. The Paco Fire Station is still investigating the cause of the fire that consumed an estimated P70,000 worth of property. —Sherylin Untalan/RF, GMA Integrated News
