MANILA, Philippines — Eleven people were killed when a building caught fire at Carvajal Street in Binondo, Manila on Friday.
Speaking to radio stations DZBB and DZRH on Friday, village official Nelson Ty of Barangay 289 Zone 27 where the building is located, confirmed the deaths, including the wife of the building’s owner.
“The owner’s wife is among the casualties on the building’s third floor,” Ty said in Filipino.
The village councilor said she may have been trying to retrieve items from the blaze, and was trapped, as a result.
According to the Manila Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office, the first alarm was raised on the building at 7:28 a.m., while the second alarm was raised at 8:14 a.m.
The fire was declared under control at 9:31 a.m. and it was declared “fire out” at 10:03 a.m.
