Marina, PCG hold forum on maritime safety practices

THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) held a forum on July 31, 2024, to enhance cooperation and improve maritime safety practices.
The event brought together representatives from both agencies to discuss and align efforts in ensuring a safe and sustainable maritime industry.

The forum provided a platform to review and align laws, rules and regulations, focusing on their effective enforcement to improve compliance. It also facilitated discussions on capacity-building, training initiatives, safety incidents and sharing best practices.
Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan thanked the attendees and emphasized the importance of the forum in strengthening partnerships with other agencies, particularly the PCG while encouraging participants to prioritize the safety, security, and welfare of the public and stakeholders as collective goals.

Vice Adm. Joseph Coyme, who led the PCG delegation and represented PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Latorilla Gavan, said that the forum was a crucial platform for aligning communication between the two agencies to share vital information on maritime topics and incidents effectively.
During the forum, the Marina and PCG presenters discussed various topics, including the Marina Circulars, maritime safety, the conduct of vessel safety enforcement inspections, maritime incident communication and reporting procedures, the safety, security and environmental numbering management database system, and the conduct of salvage vis-à-vis ship breaking.

Officials of both Marina and PCG agreed to conduct similar forums regularly.
The event concluded with the closing remarks of Engr. Ronaldo Bandalaria, who highlighted the crucial need for close collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard.

The forum is part of the Marina administrator’s Ten-Point Agenda, particularly Item 5, emphasizing the importance of forging strong partnerships with the PCG and other key agencies.
