THE Commission on Appointments (CA) took all of 10 minutes to unanimously approve the ad-interim appointment of former senator Juan Edgardo Angara as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday.
“Secretary Angara’s task ahead is gargantuan, but I have full confidence in his ability to lead the DepEd with excellence and integrity,” Senate President Francis Escudero, CA chairman, said.
“His proven track record in legislative work, particularly in education reform, uniquely positions him to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. His background in Philippine and international education systems equips him with the necessary perspective and expertise to elevate our educational standards.”

As chairman of the CA Committee on Education, Sen. Raffy Tulfo endorsed Angara’s appointment following a brief panel deliberation.
Within less than 10 minutes of Angara’s appearance before the CA Committee on Education, the Senate and the House swiftly approved his ad interim appointment as he was excused from delivering his opening statement, and the members from both chambers no longer questioned his fitness to the DepEd portfolio.
Sen. Loren Legarda promptly moved for quick approval and referred the matter to the plenary for final approval.
She noted that this was also a courtesy to Angara, who had previously served as a member of the Senate, the CA and the House.
Sen. Ronald dela Rosa seconded the motion, which was approved by House Majority Floor Leader LRay Villafuerte and the 12-member House contingent.
They affirmed that Angara’s competence and qualifications for the position were beyond question.
Angara thanked his former colleagues from the Senate and the House for their trust and confidence in him and assured them of his commitment to working with all sectors of society to ensure that every Filipino child has access to quality education.

“Education is the cornerstone of our nation’s future, and it is through collective effort that we can address the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead,” Angara said.
Angara served as a senator from 2013 to 2024 and as the representative of Aurora’s lone district from 2004 to 2013.
He received his basic education at Xavier School in San Juan, Metro Manila. He then attended Douai School in the UK and finished his Bachelor of Science degree in International Relations with honors from the London School of Economics.
He finished his law degree at the University of the Philippines College of Law and earned his Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
