The event, well-attended by the press and Ashley’s fellow content creators and celebrities, was held at the Electric Garden in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Her young-looking dad, Richard Yap, seen these days as a mainstay of GMA afternoon series Abot Kamay Na Pangarap, was revealed to be the brand ambassador.

As medical practitioners share differing views on collagen supplements, Sip2Glow invited board-certified dermatologist and registered pharmacist Beatrice Maxine Chan to debunk some myths, share some fun facts, and weigh in on the benefits of taking collagen.

I learned that in the 1970s, collagen supplements were used as a substitute for sugar and fat, especially by those who were trying to lose weight. “Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body,” Dr. Chan shared, “It accounts for 30 percent of our body’s total protein.” Additionally, aside from our skin, collagen can also be found in our bones, cartilage, blood vessels, and intestines. As Dr. Chan continued to share, collagen came from the Greek word κόλλα (kolla) which means “glue” and -γέν (gen), denoting “producing.”

Enhanced skin elasticity and hydration. Collagen is a crucial protein that provides structure to the skin. Drinking collagen supplements can significantly improve skin elasticity and hydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This is particularly beneficial as natural collagen production declines with age. Lifestyle-related factors that make us lose collagen faster are unprotected sun exposure, smoking or exposure to air pollution, stress, lack of sleep, or alcohol abuse.

Support for joint health. Collagen is not only vital for skin but also for maintaining healthy joints. As a response to critics who say that collagen supplements are just degraded in the intestines and do not work, Dr. Chan said, “It depends. It will depend on what type of collagen you are taking.”  She then asked her audience to focus on hydrolyzed collagen. “Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen that has been degraded into smaller pieces. This makes it easier for them to be absorbed and digested by our body,” Dr. Chan explained. “It has higher solubility compared to native collagen.”

After introducing the different types of collagen supplements in the market like capsules or tablets and powders or liquid forms, Dr. Chan revealed, “It is the powder or liquid form that has the highest bioavailability or gets absorbed quickly by our body.” According to the study she showed, it is known that liquid collagen is absorbed into the bloodstream more quickly and efficiently and shortens the digestion time of protein than solid supplements do.

“To summarize, you have to take collagen for at least 12 weeks to see or observe any noticeable benefit,” Dr. Chan reminded at the end of her talk.

“You also have to make sure you do not discontinue intake for one month, otherwise, the results will rapidly decline.” She also added that dietary supplements are not meant to cure, treat, or prevent diseases. It is best to seek advice and get proper guidance from a dermatologist.
