The National Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources recovered 60 colonies of endangered stingless bees in a joint operation in Nagcarlan, Laguna.
According to the bureau, a letter request from the DENR prompted the NBI to start a surveillance operation that identified a suspect who operated in Nagcarlan.
The NBI said that an inspection of the suspect’s premises revealed numerous colonies of endangered stingless bees, locally known as “Biroi,” and the sale of honey extracted from the said species.
The NBI then launched the joint inspection and operation on August 6.
The bees were turned over to the DENR for disposition.
Meanwhile, the NBI said the suspect admitted to sourcing the bees from a certain “Julius” in Majayjay, Laguna.
The bureau was preparing legal documents for complaints against the suspect for violating Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.
They are also seeking to arrest “Julius.” — DVM, GMA Integrated News
