At least 14 tropical cyclones are forecast to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) from August to December, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA weather specialist Joey Figuracion said the La Niña phenomenon could trigger more storms between October and December.

“During a typhoon, if there is La Niña, there may be more. But in terms of rain, it also depends on the season. We used to mention that during El Niño, there is not much rain. But it’s a different story when it’s southwest monsoon because it enhances the south during El Niño,” Figuracion said.

Meanwhile, he said there is a slim chance of a typhoon developing in the next two weeks.

“Based on the forecasting models, we don’t see a typhoon after ‘Carina,’” Figuracion said.
