SEN. Bong Go has reiterated his unwavering support for Filipino para-athletes, highlighting the necessity for greater incentives and recognition in all sports.

He acknowledged the challenges and accomplishments of para-athletes, emphasizing that their hard work and dedication should be recognized, just like the “elite” athletes who participated in the recent Summer Olympics.

“Let’s give appropriate support to our para-athletes. They also worked hard to get gold, they also worked hard in every fight… they also sweated. The gold, silver, and bronze that they will win are the same. That is also an honor for our country,” he said. “The incentives they receive from the government should be increased. What is that small amount compared to their hard work and honor that they bring for our country?”

Go authored Senate Bill (SB) 2116, which aims to amend Republic Act (RA) 10699, also known as the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.” The measure seeks to upgrade the incentives for para-athletes competing in international events.

As chairman of the Senate Youth Committee, Go has urged the government to prioritize sports engagement among citizens, not only for elite athletes but also for aspiring youth athletes, especially at the grassroots.

On August 6, Go extended a substantial financial grant to Filipino para-athletes gearing up for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

The grant distribution took place in the Senate, where para-athletes and their coaches received financial support from the senator and the Philippine Sports Commission.
