Directors’ guild denounces cancellation of ‘Lost Sabungeros’

The Directors’ Guild of the Philippines (DGPI) has strongly condemned the cancellation of the documentary film “Lost Sabungeros” at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.

The guild expressed deep concern over the intimidation tactics used to silence the filmmakers and emphasized its unwavering support for creative freedom and the safety of film workers.

In a statement, DGPI President Mark Meily said the cancellation highlights the challenges faced by those who dare to expose the truth through their art. The guild extended its sympathy to the filmmakers, the festival, and the audience affected by the incident.

“We are deeply concerned by the intimidation tactics employed by parties that seek to stifle the voice of filmmakers. The recent disruption, which resulted in the unfortunate cancellation of the screening of ‘Lost Sabungeros’ for public safety reasons, is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those who dare to challenge the entrenched through their art,” the statement read.

Despite the setback, the DGPI urged filmmakers to persevere in their pursuit of storytelling, emphasizing the importance of protecting creative spaces and confronting uncomfortable truths. The guild called on the public to support freedom of expression and to stand with those who use their art to address societal issues.

“The DGPI calls upon all filmmakers and our society to protect this freedom and democratic space, and to remain brave and resolute in their creative endeavors. It is through the courage to confront uncomfortable truths and address societal issues that we contribute to a more informed and empathetic world,” it added.

“Lost Sabungeros,” an investigative documentary by GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures, delves into the mysterious disappearances of over 30 cockfighters since 2021. The film’s producers and director expressed disappointment over the cancellation but vowed to release the documentary to the public at a later date.

The film’s cancellation due to “security concerns” has sparked outrage among filmmakers and the public alike. The DGPI has extended its support to the filmmakers and the Cinemalaya festival, while urging authorities to address the underlying issues that led to the incident.
