THE Kapisanan ng Social Media Broadcasters ng Pilipinas Inc. (KSMBPI) welcomed 50 new and highly qualified teachers for the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority’s (Tesda) pioneering course, Social Media Creation.

KSMBPI founding chairman Michael Raymond Aragon said the first batch of teachers completed the weeklong training, which started in the first week of August 2024. Aragon said the KSMBPI, as Tesda’s industry partner, trained the teachers on social media courses.

Tesda, on the other hand, handled their training on the required teaching methodology.

These pioneering teachers, he said, will, in turn, be deployed nationwide to train others interested in teaching social media content creation, which will be offered in all 5,000 Tesda-accredited Technical Vocational Institutes (TVIs) as early as September 2024.

In December 2023, just days after it was announced that Tesda would formally offer the social media content creation course, about 40,000 people immediately showed interest.

The little delay in starting the course was “due to the lack of qualified teachers for this pioneering Tesda social media course,” Aragon pointed out.

“This was when KSMBPI became Tesda’s industry partner in social media,” he said.

In his speech during the certification ceremonies for Tesda’s new social media content creation teachers held at Treston International College in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, on Friday, Aragon stressed that the rise of social media has “revolutionized communication, information dissemination and even the very fabric of our societies.”

“It is no longer a mere platform for personal connections, but a powerful force that can shape public discourse, drive social change and, ultimately, contribute to nation-building,” the founder of the country’s social media watchdog said.

However, Aragon noted that the potential of social media remains largely untapped, particularly in developing nations such as the Philippines.

“While we see a surge in social media adoption, the lack of adequate training and awareness hinders its full potential. This is where social media competency training emerges as a crucial vehicle for nation-building,” he said.

Aragon said social media competency training empowers individuals to become informed and responsible digital citizens and fosters national unity and social cohesion.
