(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake (not 6.0 as earlier reported) jolted Northern Samar Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the quake occurred at 11:39 a.m. some 34 kilometers northwest of Pambujan.
Tectonic in origin, it had a depth of 10 kilometers.
While aftershocks were likely, Phivolcs said damage to infrastructure was not expected.
Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said Intensity 5 was felt by residents in Bobon, Catarman, Laoang, Lavezares, Palapag, Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar while Intensity 4 in Pilar and City of Sorsogon, Sorsogon.
He said residents in Legazpi and Tabaco cities in Albay; Virac, Catanduanes; City of Masbate, Masbate; Bulusan and Irosin, Sorsogon; and Burauen and Javier, Leyte felt Intensity 3 while Intensity 2 was felt in Calubian, Hilongos, Leyte and Mahaplag, Leyte; and Hinunangan and Sogod, Southern Leyte.
Instrumental Intensity 5 was recorded in Rosario and San Roque, Northern Samar while Intensity 4 in Bulusan and City of Sorsogon, Sorsogon; Can-Avid, Eastern Samar; Abuyog, Leyte; and Gandara, Samar.
