The red carpet premiere of  Mamay: A Journey to Greatness  on Aug. 27 at SM Megamall Cinema 1 drew a significant crowd, including cast members, political colleagues, and supporters of Mayor  Marcos Mamay.

The event showcased not just a story, but the life and work of a man who has become a respected figure in the Philippines, known for his dedication to promoting peace and development among Christian and Muslim communities.

Mayor Mamay, who has been a public servant for years, has made it clear that the film is not a political statement, but rather a reflection of his advocacies.

“This is an inspiring film that mirrors my journey and the challenges I’ve faced,” he said in a press interview before the screening. “I believe our film industry has the power to unite people through the stories it tells, and that’s why I contribute my efforts to keep it vibrant and thriving.”

The stars of ‘Mamay: A Journey to Greatness’

Directed by  Neal “Buboy” Tan, the biographical film features action star  Jeric Raval  in the lead role, with  Ara Mina  playing Mamay’s wife, and  Teejay Marquez  as the young Mamay.

The story traces Mamay’s life from childhood through his public service, highlighting his commitment to resolving family feuds and clan conflicts, and his advocacy for the rights and dignity of all people.

Raval expressed the challenge of accurately capturing Mamay’s character.

“I had to study his mannerisms and way of speaking to ensure an authentic portrayal,” Raval said in a previous interview.

Ara Mina also took care to understand her character, even wearing clothes provided by the mayor’s wife to enhance the authenticity of her performance.

The film’s theme song, “Hamon,” recorded by  Gerald Santos  and penned by  Vehnee Saturno, perfectly adds an emotional layer to the story, which   revolves around the themes of perseverance and success despite hardships.

As the National Vice President of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) and the president of the LMP-Lanao del Norte Chapter, Mayor Mamay’s commitment to his constituents extends to his involvement in the film industry. His efforts to produce a movie that inspires and unites people reflect his broader mission of service, which is why he  is considering submitting the film to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival.

“I hope to reach a wider audience.  The MMFF is highly anticipated and could share my life story with many more people,” he said. “Regardless of the outcome, I hope the film will inspire viewers to chase their dreams and contribute to their communities.”

Mamay is also eyeing   future collaborations in the film industry, particularly in creating advocacy films focused on education.

“We are excited about working with other film outfits and considering a new advocacy film centered on education. We are particularly interested in featuring Alden Richards and Kathryn Bernardo as the stars,” he added.

For his parting words, Mamay reiterated that the film’s message is clear: poverty is not a hindrance to achieving one’s dreams.
