MANILA, Philippines — More than 10,000 law school graduates took the Bar examinations yesterday, according to the Supreme Court (SC).
Of the 10,483 examinees, 5,234 were new applicants, 4,060 were previous takers and 1,189 were refreshers.
Most of the examinees were women (6,108) while there were 4,735 men.
Some of the over 12,000 applicants were finishing their fourth year in law school and “did not graduate,” SC Associate Justice Mario Lopez noted.
“Failure to graduate will disqualify you from the Bar exam. That is the main reason why there is a considerable number of examinees who failed to take the exam,” Lopez said.
There are 155 senior citizens who qualified for the Bar exams while 313 are with special needs.
The youngest Bar taker is 23 years old while the oldest is 78.
Political and public international law and commercial and taxation laws were covered on the first day of the examinations.
The second day of the Bar exam is set on Sept. 11 and the last day on Sept. 15.
Results of the Bar exams are expected by early December.
The oath-taking ceremony and signing of the roll of attorneys are scheduled on Jan. 24, 2025.
Lopez assured examinees that the SC has contingency plans for typhoons and other disasters, considering that two tropical cyclones are expected to enter the country this month.
Meanwhile, at least 400 personnel of the Manila Police District were deployed at the University of Santo Tomas and San Beda University – the other venues of the Bar exam in Metro Manila. — Mark Ernest Villeza
