ANTI-TOXICS group EcoWaste Coalition on Thursday cautioned Filipinos over an underarm whitening product that contained the toxic substance of mercury, after a woman in Singapore was admitted to hospital over a severe reaction.

“For the protection of Filipino consumers, the EcoWaste Coalition renewed its call for the strict enforcement of the global, regional and national ban on mercury cosmetics,” the group said in a statement.

Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore issued an alert over the product 88 Total White Underarm Cream, which is widely sold in the Philippines, after it detected a high level of the toxic heavy metal mercury and betamethasone, which is a potent steroid.

EcoWaste Coalition National Coordinator Aileen Lucero said the group monitored online shopping websites during the 9.9 sale and found out that the product remained on sale.

“As per our monitoring coinciding with the recent 9.9 online shopping sales, dozens of product listings for 88 Total White Underarm Cream can still be found in major e-commerce sites despite being flagged by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2021,” she said in a statement.
