AUSTAL USA has been awarded a $450 million contract by General Dynamics Electric Boat to expand its submarine module production capacity at its US shipyard.

Austal CEO Patrick Gregg said, “General Dynamics Electric Boat has recognised that Austal USA is a solid partner to deliver high-quality components for Virginia- and Columbia-class submarines. This growing partnership demonstrates confidence in Austal USA’s commitment to meet the needs of the US maritime industrial base and support the most critical needs of the US Navy.”

The contract supports the US Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base by enhancing infrastructure to deliver one Columbia-class and two Virginia-class submarines annually.

The project includes designing, constructing, and outfitting a new module fabrication and outfitting facility. Construction is expected to begin in autumn 2024 and finish by 2026. The facility will create approximately 1,000 jobs, increasing Austal USA’s ability to fabricate, outfit and transport submarine components.

Austal, Australia’s largest defense exporter, continues to play a key role in global shipbuilding, designing and constructing advanced vessels for both commercial and defense operators.
