Filipino street food balut (fertilized duck egg) unexpectedly topped Taste Atlas’ 2024 list of worst-rated Filipino dishes, earning a 2.7 rating out of 5.

The international gastronomic database recently released its latest rankings, based on user reviews from around the world.

While balut is often promoted as a must-try for foreign visitors, it received a surprisingly low rating from international palates.

On its website, Taste Atlas described balut as a “poor man’s meal.”

“Although balut is closely associated with Filipino cuisine and has gained popularity globally, it is still considered a poor man’s meal in the Philippines,” it wrote.

Other Filipino dishes that made the list of worst-rated cuisines include inipit from Bulacan, pinipig, suman, biko, and Bicol’s kinalas.
