The gates of three major dams in northern Luzon remained open on Sunday as these continue to release water from the heavy rains in the past few days, according to PAGASA.

As of 8 a.m., the state weather bureau said two gates were open at Ambuklao Dam in Benguet at 0.6 meters.

The dam’s reservoir water level (RWL) was at 751.78 meters on Saturday, then dipped to 751.51 meters on Sunday. It has a 752-meter normal high water level (NHWL).

Also in Benguet, the Binga Dam in Agno River has one gate open at 0.5 meters. Its RWL also decreased from 574.67 meters to 573.91 meters, as compared to its 575-meter NHWL.

PAGASA hydrologist Sonia Serrano said some barangays in the province may be affected by the opening of dam gates but it should not be a cause of concern among residents as the amount of water being released is coursed to another dam.

“Huwag naman mag-aalala dahil itong mga nire-release na ito ay pupunta sa San Roque Dam na hindi naman ngayon nakabukas dahil mababa pa rin, nasa normal level pa rin ang San Roque Dam natin,”she said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.

(Don’t worry because the water being released will go to the San Roque Dam which is not currently open because its water reservoir is still at a normal level.)

Meanwhile, one gate was also opened at Magat Dam—located between Ifugao and Isabela—at 2.0 meters.

It had a 186.43-meter RWL on Saturday which decreased to 186.12 the following day. The dam has a 190-meter NHWL.

“Kaya pa naman ito ng ilog natin dito sa Magat River kaya wala pa namang binabalita na pagbabaha na nagaganap,” Serrano added.

(The Magat River can still handle the releasing of water, so there is no reported flooding yet in the area.)

Gates of the other dams in the region remained closed with water levels still below the normal high-water level.—Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News
