MANILA, Philippines — The cloud clusters spotted over Northern Luzon will likely become a low pressure area (LPA) within the day and eventually a tropical depression over the weekend, the state-run weather agency said on Thursday.

Weather specialist Benison Estareja of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the tropical cyclone would be called “Julian,” the sixth storm to hit the country this month and 10th this year.

“Julian was predicted to stay only over extreme Northern Luzon particularly in Batanes and would not be a threat to the weather condition in the country,” Estareja said.

Meanwhile, the Pagasa forecaster said they were also monitoring another LPA but which has a slim chance of entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

“This may intensify into a tropical depression, just the same, this would not directly affect the country as it may go away from the PAR region,” he said.

In the meantime, the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ) — an imaginary line where the air from the southern and northern hemispheres meets — is affecting Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao.

Scattered and isolated rain showers will be experienced in these areas in 24 hours due to this weather system, the state weather bureau said.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will likely have partly cloudy to overcast skies but due to the localized thunderstorms.

“All throughout the day, most parts of the country would enjoy another generally fair weather except for isolated downpours in the late afternoon or at night,” Estareja said.
