THE Department of Energy (DoE) on Friday announced it had recommended to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, for the period of July to August, a total of 41 energy projects for system impact studies (SIS).

An SIS determines the capacity of the power grid to accommodate a new generator and identifies necessary improvements such as additional transmission lines, transformers or substations.

Of the 41 projects, 12 are powered by renewable energy (RE). The ones with the greatest capacities are the Sapang Balen Solar Sustainable Energy Corp.’s 231.600 megawatt-peak (MWp), the Sapang Balen Solar 1 Power Project in Davao Oriental and the Maaraw Renewable Energy Corp.’s 375.391-MWp Liloan Solar Power Project in Cebu.

Of the 12 RE projects, 11 are new ones — eight solar, one hydro, one geothermal and one wind. One solar project needed an amendment.

For August, the DoE said that of 29 endorsed projects, one wind project was up for amendments, while 28 renewable projects were new. Of these 28 projects, 12 are wind, 13 solar and three hydro.
