Cyrus Cuenco had one of his most confident performances on Friday as he registered a career-high 26 points in Mapua University’s 91-72 win against San Sebastian College-Recoletos in NCAA Season 100.

The third year player admitted that it was his teammates who helped him in boosting his confidence.

“Kumuha lang ako ng kumpiyansa sa defense at saka sa tiwala ng kasama ko. Nag-create sila kaya nalilibre ako. Nasasakto sa akin ‘yung mga pasa kaya tinitira ko lang with confidence,” Cuenco said on the heels of his career game.

Cuenco also had the green light from head coach Randy Alcantara as he expected the Cardinals to step up.

“Sabi nga, si Clint [Escamis] can score naman. ‘Yung Cuenco, ready naman ‘yan mag-deliver. Ang sabi ko, hindi puwedeng [lagi] tayo mag-rely sa mga scorers natin. Kailangan din natin pagkatiwalaan mga kasama natin,” said Alcantara.

Cuenco’s career-high performance came as the Cardinals bounced back after losing to Lyceum of the Philippines University, which he said was also a learning experience for the Intramuros-based squad.

“Sa amin nga, every game naman nagle-level up kami. Win or lose, may lessons na matutuunan kami,” he added.

While Cuenco thanked his teammates for the trust on and off the court, Cuenco admitted that he has yet to adjust to being one of the leaders of the team, alongside Escamis and senior Joaquin Garcia.

“Sa’ kin naga-adjust pa ako maging leader sa team, kami nina Clint, Joaqui, naga-adjust kami so kailangan namin maging composed and cheer up ang team namin,” Cuenco said.

Escamis, meanwhile, praised his teammate.

“Lagi ko siyang kinakausap na wala na talagang iba, ikaw na talaga ang main man ng Mapua. Hate it or like it, kailangan mo i-accept ‘yung role na ‘yon. This game, past few games, napakita niya ‘yun. I’m proud of him,” Escamis told GMA News Online.
