The voter registration period in areas in Northern Luzon affected by Typhoon Julian may be extended, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Erwin Garcia said Monday.

However, Garcia said there will be no extension in unaffected areas including the National Capital Region (NCR), according to a tweet of GMA Integrated News’ Sandra Aguinaldo.

“Ngayong araw ang katapusan ng registration of voters. Bagamat sinabi namin hindi kami magpapa-extend ng registration subalit kasalukuyang  binabagyo ‘yung mga kababayan natin sa may Northern Luzon kung kaya binigyan namin ng authority ang regional offices na nasa kanila na ang discretion kung hindi ipagpapatuloy ang voter registration ngayon para ito ay mai-reset sa ibang araw,” Garcia said during the briefing on the updates and preparations for the 2025 national and local elections and Bangsamoro polls.

(Today marks the end of the voter registration period. Although we said we wouldn’t extend it, due to the current situation affecting the people of Northern Luzon, we’ve given regional offices the discretion to decide whether to continue or reset the registration for another day. )

“Kung kakailanganin, halimbawa na bukas, kaya lang magkakasabay ito sa simula ng filing ng certificates of candidacy (COCs) na tatagal hanggang October 8,” said Garcia.

(If needed, for instance, it could be extended up to tomorrow, however it will coincide with the start of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) which will run until October 8.)

The voter registration period for the 2025 May polls ends on Monday, September 30. It started on February 12.

As of September 17, the Comelec said it had processed around 6,442,112 registrations for the 2025 national and local elections. Meanwhile, 5,376,630 voters were deactivated and a total of 714,152 voters were deleted from the official voter list.

The poll chief reiterated the period for the filing of COCs for the Bangsamoro elections was moved to November 4 to November 9, 2024 following the exclusion of Sulu from the autonomous region.

Garcia also recalled the Comelec resolution adopting the Senate resolution seeking to include the Enlisted Men’s Barrios (EMBO) barangays as part of the two legislative districts of Taguig City for Eleksyon 2025.

“Handa na po ang inyong Comelec sa filing ng CoC mula October 1 to October 8 (The Comelec is ready for the filing of COCs),” he added. —Sundy Locus/AOL, GMA Integrated News
