The concession agreement between the government and the private sector for the turnover of the operations and maintenance of Laguindingan International Airport in Misamis Oriental is set to be signed this month, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said Wednesday.

“We are planning to sign the concession agreement for the Laguindingan airport within the month,” Bautista told reporters at the sidelines of the 2024 Aviation Summit in Pasay City.

The Transportation chief confirmed that the unsolicited public-private partnership (PPP) project’s original proponent, Aboitiz InfraCapital, is set to be awarded the concession deal for the Laguindingan Airport’s management.

The PPP project for the upgrade, expansion, operations, and maintenance of Laguindingan Airport was approved by the NEDA Board in July 2023.

“It will take us four to six months before we will be able to officially turn it over,” Bautista said, noting that the PPP project needs to undergo several conditions before the airport’s operations can be officially transferred to the private sector.

“Just like what happened here in NAIA, it took almost six months for San Miguel to take over. The same is true of Laguindingan,” he said.

Under the previous administration, Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. bagged original proponent status for its unsolicited proposal to take over the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental.

The company submitted proposals to take over the Laguindingan Airport under a 35-year concession agreement with the government. —RF, GMA Integrated News
