Diego Gutierrez, son of actress Lotlot de Leon and Ramon Christopher, is stepping into the spotlight with the release of his latest single, “Huling Sayaw.”

Gutierrez, who has been steadily building his music career, shared that the track came from a deeply emotional place, as it was written following a breakup after a seven-year relationship.

“The story behind Huling Sayaw is about this time last year, I went through a breakup. It took me a while to write anything because there were so many emotions. Huling Sayaw is the first song I wrote after the breakup,” the 27-year-old revealed in an intimate interview.

He added that although the breakup was amicable, it still carried emotional weight.

“Maybe when she hears the song, she’ll know that it’s for her. The reason for the breakup is, I guess, we were just on different timelines, but there are no hard feelings at all. I think it was just the best for both of us,” he admitted.

Gutierrez began writing music during his college years, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that he realized he wanted to pursue it seriously. According to him, songwriting became his outlet for dealing with difficult emotions.

“I’m in a much better place now. I’m happy. Songwriting helped because I’m the type of person who doesn’t really open up much, even to my family. I don’t really talk about what I’m going through, so songwriting became my outlet to express my feelings,” he said.

When it comes to inspiration for his music, Gutierrez mentioned that he draws it personal experiences and observations of life, while his family plays a big role in the process.

“My songs come from my own experiences, but I also like to write about other people’s experiences or anything in general, like series or movies I watch — I can write about those too,” he shared.

“I first let my siblings and friends hear the songs I make. Actually, when I first played Huling Sayaw for Ate Janine and Mom, they cried because the song is quite sad,” Gutierrez continued.

With five singles already under his belt namely “On A Dream,” “Hanggang Sa Dulo,” “House of Tears,” “Sino Na Tayo,” and “I Don’t Think You Can,” “Huling Sayaw” marks his sixth release. Currently, he plans to continue creating music, with hopes of putting out an EP next year.

“When it comes to my genre, I’m still exploring. Actually, when I write, I don’t really think too much about what genre I’m going for. Whatever comes, comes,” Gutierrez noted.

“But hopefully, next year we’ll be able to put out an EP, not an album just yet. For now, I’m just trying to release as much music as I can consistently so it builds up, and then we’ll create the EP,” he added.

While his musical influences include John Mayer, Shawn Mendes, and The 1975, Gutierrez shared dreams of working with international star Justin Bieber and some local talents.

“My dream collaboration is with Justin Bieber, and locally, with Zack Tabudlo, Juan Karlos, and Adie because I listen to a lot of their music as well,” he said.

Finally asked if he is open to acting projects just like his parents and sister Janine, he pointed out, “Right now, I’m more focused on my singing career. Although I also want to act, the opportunities in music are better at the moment. But if an opportunity in acting comes up, I’ll take it.”

Gutierrez’s “Huling Sayaw” is out now on all digital streaming platforms, while the visualizer will drop on Friday, October 4.
