President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has issued an executive order (EO) transferring administrative supervision of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) from the Department of Education (DepEd) to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Marcos ordered the transfer by virtue of EO 70, which seeks to strengthen the FAP and further develop the country’s movie industry. The EO was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin by authority of the President.
The FAP, created under EO 640-A (series of 1981 as amended by EO 513 in 2006, was under the oversight of the DepEd.
Citing the Philippine Creative Industries Act, the President said it is the responsibility of the State to promote and support the development of the country’s creative industries such as the film industry “by protecting and strengthening the rights and capacities of, among others, creative films, artists, creators, workers, and stakeholders in creative industries.”
The DTI is the lead implementing agency of the Philippines Creative Industries Act.
“[T]o maximize the full potential of the Philippines Film Industry, it is imperative to ensure that world-class Filipino talents in the field of motion picture arts and sciences are given due recognition and assistance by the National Government,” Marcos said.
The EO 70, issued on Oct. 2, 2024, would take effect immediately upon publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
