Labor leader and lawyer Sonny Matula on Saturday filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator for the 2025 midterm elections.
“Magsisismula tayo sa nakabinbin na P150 (daily minimum wage) sa House of Representatives at yung P100 (daily minimum wage) na sinulong at naaprobahan na sa senado,” Mastula said.
(We will start with the pending P150 daily minimum wage in the House of Representatives and the P100 daily minimum wage that was approved in the Senate.)
He added that if he gets a seat in the Senate, he will also work on protecting laborers who are forming a union and ending contractualization.
“Dapat ang mga managgagawa ay hindi kontrakltual sa regular na trabaho,” Matula said.
(There should be no contractual employees doing the job of regular employees.)
Matula is the national president of the Federation of Free Workers and chairperson of the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition.
He ran as senator in 2019 and 2022 but failed to land in the magic 12.
Meanwhile, two individuals filed their COCs anew after they were deemed nuisance candidates in the previous elections.
Internet sensation Ronaldo Plaza, who claimed that he is half-human and half-zombie, ran for senator in 2019 and president in 2022, but was declared a nuisance candidate in both elections.
72-year-old Leodegario Estrella said it was the second time he filed his candidacy because he was deemed a nuisance candidate due to being poor.
Aside from them, here are the senators who filed their COCs on the fifth day of the filing period:
- Warlito Bovier
- Wilson Aclan
- Maria Charito Billones
- Jerson Ares
- Primo Capuno Jr.
- Ben Tulfo
- Relly Jose Jr.
- Richard Nicolas
- Virginia Sabit
