President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed a new Special Prosecutor of the Office of the Ombudsman, the independent government body tasked with prosecuting graft cases against high government officials.
According to the Presidential Communications Office on Saturday, Marcos appointed lawyer Mariflor Castillo, succeeding former Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Edilberto Sandoval.
Mandated with a fixed term of seven years, the Special Prosecutor is empowered to conduct preliminary investigation and prosecute criminal cases against erring government officials that are within the jurisdiction of the Sandiganbayan, and enter into a plea bargaining agreement.
