PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to welcome today South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who arrived in Manila on Sunday, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said.

The Philippines is Yoon’s first stop in his six-day Southeast Asian swing, which will conclude his and Marcos’ participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit in Laos later in the week.

The visits are Yoon’s way of establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership with Asean to deepen cooperation with Southeast Asia, the Yongsan presidential office previously said.

“President Marcos and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos will officially welcome ROK President Yoon, together with First Lady KIM Keon Hee, during the ceremonies at the Malacañan Palace on 7 October 2024,” the PCO said in an earlier statement.

It said that Yoon’s visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries in March 1949.

During their meeting, Marcos and Yoon are expected to discuss areas of mutual interest such as cooperation in the political, security and defense, maritime, economic and development fields, people-to-people ties, as well as labor and consular matters.

Both leaders are likewise expected to exchange views on regional and international issues “and reaffirm the vibrant and dynamic relations between the two countries.”

Yoon’s stop in the country marks the first state visit to the Philippines of a South Korean leader in about 13 years since former President Lee Myung-bak’s trip in November 2011.

He will first visit the monument of Jose Rizal before proceeding to the Palace for the official welcoming ceremony.
