THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is set to advance infrastructure projects by developing offshore wind energy initiatives in collaboration with the Department of Energy (DoE).
The DoE has identified three key ports for offshore wind (OSW) development: the Port of Currimao in Ilocos Norte, the Port of Batangas in Sta. Clara, Batangas City, and the Port of Jose Panganiban in Camarines Norte.
PPA General Manager Jay Santiago plans to initiate detailed engineering designs and necessary upgrades at these ports to ensure that the facilities are fully prepared for the installation and ongoing operations of OSW energy projects.

The Port of Currimao is strategically located near 13 offshore wind energy service contracts (OWESCs) approved by the DoE, with a total potential capacity of 9,489 MW.
Similarly, the Port of Batangas is adjacent to 29 OWESCs, with a combined potential capacity of 24,300 MW.
Meanwhile, the Port of Jose Panganiban is close to 14 OWESCs, with a total capacity of 8,150 MW.
To meet the requirements of these projects, the PPA will undertake a comprehensive feasibility study focused on infrastructure development.
“We remain committed to supporting the DoE’s initiatives to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy in the Philippines,” Santiago said.
Beyond OSW projects, PPA is implementing sustainability initiatives to minimize environmental impact. These efforts are part of the agency’s Green Port program, which includes the use of solar-powered lighting and the implementation of shore-based power supply (SBPS) systems to reduce emissions from vessels.
Ongoing green port projects are underway across various locations, including Sasa in Davao City and Capinpin in Bataan, Catagbacan in Bohol, Siargao in Surigao del Norte, Lavonia in Cagayan, Plaridel in Misamis Occidental, and Balogo in Camarines Norte.
The PPA’s efforts align with a broader modernization initiative, integrating renewable energy and decarbonization strategies to support sustainable port operations.
