‘Alamat’ exhibit breathes new life into Filipino mythology at Luzon Art Fair

The Luzon Art Fair 2024, held from Oct. 3 to 6 at Bulwagang Kanlahi in Tarlac City, showcased Filipino mythology through the exhibit Alamat Magpakailanman, presented by Folklore Pilipinas. The exhibit gathered artists from various fields to reinterpret Filipino folklore using a mix of visual arts, animation, music, and film.

The exhibit highlighted well-known mythological figures, such as Apo Anno, Bakunawa, Manananggal, Maria Makiling, and Si Bulusan nan Si Aguingay. The works offered a contemporary take on these legends, drawing attention to the rich cultural narratives within Filipino myths, legends, epics, and folktales. The exhibition aimed to renew interest in these stories while linking them to modern forms of artistic expression.

Alamat Magpakailanman was directed by Lea Zoraína Lim, with contributions from a diverse group of artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers, and educators. The team included Glenda Maye Abad, Billy Adonis, Daphne Aguilar, Aligagang Alikabok, Fidel Aquino, Pepot Atienza, Diana Aviado, Luigi Azura, Phoebe Beltran-Almazan, Mary Buendia, Geri Matthew “Choi” Carretero, Marc Steven Castro, Clint Catalan, Lucylle Cawaling, Marc Vincent Cosico, and Kathleen Sareena Dagum.

Also contributing their talents to this innovative project were June Dalisay, Maoi Deauna, Tynne de Guzman, María Alexandria Enaje, Kirstein Ayn Go, Arnie Gonzales, Gabby Gonzales, Miguel Iskultura, Patrick Jean Jaquet, Dyani Lao, Nina Libatique, Lea Zoraína Lim, Liby Limoso, Kevin Lumbre, Thea Mújares, Gabí Nazareno, Eden Ocampo, Bryan Quesada, Aljon Ramírez, Joseph Renta, Benay Reyes, Jeff Reyes, Doris Rodriguez, Zion Jah Romero, Ding Royales, Hannah Belle Sindao, Angelica Soriano, Rurik Tabafunda, Erwin Torio, Margot Villamor, Chaday Villanueva, Rem Vocalan, and Joy Waldas.

The artists whose works are featured in the exhibit

The exhibit was part of Folklore Pilipinas’ broader efforts to reintroduce Filipino heritage through various media, with recent projects including the animated retelling of Datu Pat I Mata: Tudtulan Atag Sa Pulangi and student mentorship programs in art and animation.

Alamat Magpakailanman drew interest from art lovers, scholars, and folklore enthusiasts, serving as a key attraction at the Luzon Art Fair 2024.
