A 40-foot trailer truck carrying 1,000 sacks of rice crashed into a concrete barrier and turned on its side along Mel Lopez Boulevard in Manila on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a 24 Oras report by Jaime Santos, the driver told MMDA officers that the truck in front of them suddenly stopped.

He made an effort to avoid hitting the sedan in front of him, which caused the truck to hit the concrete barriers and eventually tip over on its side.

The crash caused damage to the front part of the truck and broke its windshield, while the 1,000 sacks of rice remain intact.

“May nag-U-turn na truck to follow siya, then kabuntot… Iniwasan daw ng driver ang sasakyan na nasa harapan niya [dahil] kundi di niya raw iniwasan masa-sandwich… Yung small vehicle [ay] sedan [na] kotse. Dahil sa bigat, nawalan ng balance ang truck, tumaob na po,” said MMDA Western Traffic Unit Traffic Aide 2 Jonathan Idue.

(He was about to follow a truck taking a U-Turn, and he was tailing… He avoided the driver of the car in front of him [because] if he didn’t, it would get sandwiched… The small vehicle was a sedan car. Because of the weight, the truck lost its balance and it fell.)

The driver of the truck has been brought to the hospital after slight injury.

According to a report by Ralph Obina on Super Radyo dzBB, the truck’s owner also sent engineers to the site to determine how to remove the truck from the area.
