MANILA, Philippines —  Telco newcomer Dito Telecommunity Corp. sees its subscriber base growing to 16 million by the end of the year after hitting 13 million as of this month.

“This is not just a number; it represents the trust and confidence that millions of Filipinos have placed in us,” Dito CEO Eric Alberto said at the telco’s Thanksgiving Gala on Tuesday.

Alberto said the telco passed its fifth and final independent audit, achieving over 86 percent of population coverage and delivering speeds that exceeded the government’s minimum hurdle requirement of 55 megabits per second.

The government has mandated the telco to invest around P257 billion for network expansion from 2020 to 2024. The company underwent audit every year to assess the performance of its services.

Since receiving its certificate of convenience and necessity in 2019, the country’s “third telco” has since strived to disrupt the telecommunications industry dominated by telco giants Globe Telecom and PLDT-Smart.

“Instead of seeing hurdles, we focused on the opportunity – the opportunity not just to compete but to transform how Filipinos experience telecommunications and digitally enabled lifestyle,” Alberto said.

Alberto said Dito wants to expand its subscriber base to 16 million before the end of 2024, as the telco aims to break even as early as next year.

“That is our ambition. Next year is the sixth year. Hopefully, we can be more ambitious,” the executive said.
