MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) signed a new memorandum of agreement to provide an alternative learning system (ALS) for inmates.
Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara commended BJMP’s initiatives to provide continuing education to prisoners, among them the “Tagapangalaga Ko, Guro Ko” (my caretaker, my teacher) program that started in 2010.
“Together, we’re not just giving education; we are providing hope, we are providing dignity, we are providing a brighter future,” Angara said.
He said 20,000 inmates have enrolled in ALS for school year 2023-2024: 5,596 in elementary, 9,286 in junior high school, and 5,983 in senior high school.
“Through this MoA, we are reinforcing our commitment to leave no one behind. With your help, we reaffirm that every Filipino, no matter their circumstances, deserves a chance to learn and grow,” Angara added.
BJMP chief Ruel Rivera thanked the Education Department for its support.
“This initiative is proof of the combined efforts of the BJMP and Department of Education to create a more just and humane society through increased importance in education,” Rivera said.
